The artist believed that each figure could be realised in the form of a free standing sculpture, and obviously highly valued sculptural work. The reason he used monochrome to create many of his early Cubist paintings was because he believed colour seemed secondary to sculptural qualities. Although the figurative drawings were very simplistic i found that the real challenge was to fold the paper in such a way that the pieces would stand up independently.
